“Cromag” is most likely derived from Cro-Magnon, a defunct term used to describe one of our more recent evolutionary ancestors. Otherwise, it’s hard to explain why they would unleash their augmented super soldiers on the general population. However, it would appear that in the Cromag War, killing off the civilian population was one of New Mecca’s main objectives. Targeting civilian is, in the worst possible scenario, a shock tactic to force an enemy into submission. The NULL soldier Fifteen was a member of such a squad, as was most likely Zero himself. Later on we learn that during the Cromag War, New Mecca deployed “death squads” tasked with wiping out entire villages of civilians. He then talks about killing cromag children – as do the war veterans we commiserate with at the bar. The homeless veteran we encounter early in the game attacks us by saying “You look like a f*cking cromag. Based on how the people of New Mecca use it, it appears to be a racial slur. Outside of the phrase “Cromag War”, cromag is spelled in lowercase. To start off, the word cromag is not the designation of a people or a state. And yet, its darkest and ugliest truth is left unsaid. It is clear that, much like its real life counterpart, the Cromag War was fraught with atrocities. Their shared memories of the Cromag War paint it as Katana Zero‘s analogy of the Vietnam War. Many of the game’s main characters – including the protagonist Zero – are walking embodiments of these sins. But competition is good.Askiisoft’s savage hit Katana Zero tells a grim story, largely revolving around the sins of war. In terms of the features and in terms of the toolsets for developers, there's a ways to go. I'm not saying they won't, and hopefully they will. Steam has invested I don't know how many hundreds of millions of dollars in their platform Epic have yet to do that. "You can't compare the two things however as like for like. Epic have taken a view that their way of bringing content to their platform is far more generous revenue share and obviously they've been pushing exclusives-that's great," added Struthers. "Competition is going to come along at some point. Without them, none of this would have been a conversation in the first place," he said. "I play games on PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch, and Devolver-we've done console exclusives with Sony, with Microsoft-I think it's good, but I think we have to respect Steam for what they've done. Here's Steam-every month, accurate, straightforward, and transparent."įor that, Struthers has a lot of respect for Steam, but he also doesn't get the anger around Epic's exclusivity. "We've all got our horror stories about doing audits on our publishers and finding huge discrepancies about what was being reported in sales. If there is more money and it's more frequent, you can have better terms with developers.

"And that led to realignment with relationships with developers. To be in a 70/30 relationship, it was transformative in every sense," he explained. "To come out of a model where we were, as a games publisher, maybe making 25 percent, and that's if you were successful. "I feel like this conversation needs to be reset," Struthers told Gamespot at PAX Australia.

The debate over the merits of Steam as a platform in the PC space against Epic Games' ongoing war against it is as heated as it's ever been.Įpic will continue to buy more exclusives, as it feels it's the only way to change the status quo, but it's also offering developers a more favourable cut compared to the industry standard used by Steam and the majority other stores.ĭevolver Digital, the indie publisher known for a wide range of eclectic games, including Hotline Miami, Enter the Gungeon, and more recent releases like Katana Zero and Heave Ho, has weighed in on the ongoing debate.ĭevolver co-founder Graeme Struthers feels the conversation has never been properly had to begin with. Indie publisher Devolver Digital doesn't feel like the conversation of Steam vs Epic Games Store has been had the right way.
